On the eve of the most romantic holiday of the year, Lufthansa Cargo has made sure that lovers across Europe can express their feelings by presenting beautiful flowers to their loved ones on Valentine’s Day. The air carrier delivered a valuable cargo for the holiday: more than 900 tons of roses.
The roses, imported in three weeks, were transported from the Ecuadorian capital Quito, the Colombian capital Bogotá and the Kenyan capital Nairobi to Frankfurt Airport.
Most imported roses start their journey in Bolivia, Ecuador or Kenya, as the climate in these countries is ideal for growing roses throughout the year.
Roses need to reach their recipients in full strength, in the prime of their beauty, so they need to be transported quickly and carefully at a constant temperature of 2-4 degrees Celsius throughout the supply chain.
Roses are harvested several times a day from flower farms and then immediately placed in water and cooled. After sorting and packaging, the flowers are delivered directly to the airport and loaded onto cargo planes.
The flowers stay at Frankfurt Airport for only a short time and are transported along the Main River to other cities in Germany, as well as by air to other countries, including neighbors Austria and Switzerland.
Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP) also contributed to the delivery of flowers for Valentine’s Day, sending 3,300 tons to Europe in two weeks.
Flowers have been exported from Kenya, Ecuador and Colombia, including the famous Kenyan Rhodes roses.
For the first time, four Air France Boeing 777 Freighters from Nairobi to Paris traveled via Amsterdam to meet demand for flowers in the Netherlands.
On Valentine’s Day, roses delivered in time from distant lands will be especially fresh and beautiful!
