SkyNRG and Shell Aviation are working to launch Europe’s first sustainable jet fuel plant.
In November 2019, Shell Aviation announced a decision to strengthen its long-term strategic partnership with SkyNRG, the world market leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), by supporting the plan to establish and develop the first dedicated aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Europe.
The Delfzijl plant in the Netherlands is scheduled to go online in 2022, and for the first time, customers will be offered sustainable aviation fuel produced in Europe for the European aviation market. The plant will produce 100,000 tons of fuel annually, as well as naphtha and 15,000 tons of bio-LPG per year as by-products. Previously, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines made a 10-year commitment to purchase 75,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel per year.
Thanks to the Shell Aviation/SkyNRG collaboration, the area of use of SAF fuel is expanding before our eyes. In addition, Shell Aviation and SkyNRG support airports and air carriers in their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. Last year, Shell and SkyNRG began delivering SAFs to European airlines KLM, Scandinavian Airlines and Finnair at San Francisco Airport (SFO). They also helped Swedavia, Sweden’s largest operator, prepare for the deployment of SAF at five airports.
The fuel currently supplied to customers is made from used vegetable oil at the World Energy Paramount Los Angeles refinery, which is currently the only operating refinery in the world producing SAF fuel. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) also uses solid waste, such as packaging materials and food waste, as well as natural raw materials, including wood waste and algae. Typically, the use of sustainable raw materials in fuel production results in a 60-80% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to standard aviation fuel.
As the aviation industry aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% (by 2005 standards) by 2050, the commissioning of the Delfzijl fuel plant in the Netherlands is a timely response to the growing need to make air travel and air travel more sustainable in Europe. According to the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), a coalition of companies and aviation industry experts working to promote sustainable growth in the aviation industry, 895 million tons of CO2 were generated during air travel in 2018, which is about 2.5% of emissions greenhouse gases in the world. In November 2019, at the Aviation Industry Summit in Berlin, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) called on European governments to prioritize environmental protection in aviation.
A recent survey of air travel statistics in the US and Europe by the United Bank of Switzerland found that one in five passengers reduced the number of flights they took last year, in line with the growing Shame to Fly movement. In November 2019, at the Fortune World Forum in Paris, Air France CEO Anne Rigail acknowledged that the Shame to Fly movement, led by European environmental activists such as 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, has become one of the industry’s biggest challenges and its principles have been adopted. even members of her own family, according to Vox.
Maarten van Dijk, Managing Director of SkyNRG, commented on the SAF plant project: “The common aspirations and effective collaboration of the participating companies send a strong message to the rest of our industry about what actions are needed to ensure a sustainable future for the aviation market.”
No industry embodies the spirit of invention and technical excellence with the same grace and passion as aviation. Shell Aviation is proud of the role it plays in the history of the aviation industry. A group of aviation specialists work at a dedicated aviation research center in the United States, where they create innovative premium fuels and additives, work with GE, KLM and Airbus to improve the thermal stability of jet fuel additives, and develop lubricants for Boeing aircraft. are studying gas-to-liquid conversion for Rolls Royce, Airbus, Qatar Airways, etc.
With one of the most extensive refueling networks in the world, supplying fuel and lubricants to 900 airports in more than 60 countries, Shell Aviation serves the needs of a wide range of customers, from private pilots to the world’s largest airlines.
SkyNRG was founded by KLM, Spring Associates and EME in 2010 to develop the sustainable aviation fuel market.
SkyNRG’s mission is to make sustainable aviation fuel the new global standard.
