South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has confirmed an order for eleven mega-container ships, originally listed as the 22,000 TEU class. Under the terms of the deal, SHI will build six of the eleven ships, while Daewoo Shipping Marine Engineering (DSME) will build the remaining five.
In a statement, German engine manufacturer MAN Diesel and Turbo said the order for about eleven 23,000 TEU containerships, the largest in the industry, is on order and MAN will build the main and auxiliary engines.
The longer stroke of G-type motors results in lower RPM of the motor driving the propeller. This lower optimum engine speed allows a larger propeller to be used, which is ultimately much more efficient in terms of engine performance. Together with the optimized engine design, this means that MSC’s new products will feature reduced fuel consumption. CO2 emissions will also be reduced. The last vessel in the series must be delivered to the customer by March 15, 2020.
Meanwhile, major French shipping company CMA CGM has also signed a contract to build nine 22,000 TEU container ships at two Chinese shipyards, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, which are owned by China’s state-owned shipbuilding corporation. The production of mega container ships is planned from the end of 2019 to 2020.
Hong Kong-based OOCL is now the owner of the world’s largest container ship: OOCL Hong Kong (400m length, 21,413 TEU capacity), launched in 2017, was the first container ship to exceed 21,000 TEU capacity. The container ship was built by Samsung Heavy Industries and launched in May 2017. OOCL Hong Kong operates on a line that includes ports such as Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Yantian, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Gdansk and Wilhelmshaven. It is part of a series of six giant OOCL container ships with a capacity of over 20,000 TEUs. The last one, OOCL Indonesia, was launched in January 2018.
In addition to OOCL Hong Kong, the top three largest container ships in the world also include two giants.
Second place goes to Madrid Maersk, a 20,568 TEU container ship launched in April 2017 and owned by Danish container carrier Maersk Line. The container ship is 399 meters long and 58.6 meters wide. Madrid Maersk manufactured by Daewoo Shipbuilding & marine engineering. In third place is a new MOL vessel called MOL Triumph. This container ship, with a length of 400 meters and a width of 58.8 meters, was the first of 6 container ships with a capacity of 20,000 TEU, which will become the pearls of the MOL cargo fleet.
