Samsung Heavy Industries will build the world’s largest container ships for Evergreen.
South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries will build six of the largest container ships for Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine Corporation for $920 million.
According to SHI, each container ship will be 400 meters long, 60 meters wide and have a nominal capacity of 27,764 TEU, surpassing the record previously set by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company thanks to giant MSC Gülsün. The giant was also built at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard. The container ship is almost 62 meters wide and 400 meters long. Thanks to a cargo system developed by MacGregor International AB, the ship can carry 23,756 containers in rows of 24. Gülsün is registered in Panama.
The massive order from Evergreen strengthens SHI’s position as a leading shipbuilder in the construction of super-large container ships. SHI currently has 14 container ships with a capacity of 23,000 TEU in its order book.
“Demand for ultra-large container ships worldwide is expected to continue as vessel owners around the world have lowered their cost through economies of scale,” a SHI spokesman said. “Based on advanced technologies, including smart technology, reduced power consumption, and new hull designs, Samsung Heavy continues to lead the ultra-large container ship market and will continue to do so in the future.”
SHI’s contracts have been in excess of $5.1 billion since the start of the year, roughly 65% of its ambitious annual target of $7.8 billion. The contracts provide for the construction of 35 vessels of various types, including 14 crude oil tankers, 11 LNG tankers, 6 container ships, 2 product tankers, 1 special vessel and 1 FLUSH, according to SHI.
Evergreen’s board in September approved orders for a total of 10 vessels with a capacity of 23,000 TEU. The construction was undertaken by three shipyards: the South Korean Samsung Heavy Industries, which will build 6 ships, the Chinese Jiangnan Shipyard and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, which will build two ships each.
